Botox – Botulinum toxin injections

What is Botulinum toxin?

Botulinum toxin, more commonly called BOTOX® , has become an established brand known worldwide for a good reason: the product simply works.

When you concentrate, squint or frown, your facial muscles contract. After years of frequent muscle contractions combined with other environmental and lifestyle factors, wrinkles form and become permanent. Anti-wrinkle injections such as Botox® are made of a natural protein that relaxes (freezes) the muscles in the upper part of the face for several months.

It is important to note that there are several Botulinum Toxin brands: Botox®, Vistabel®, Bocouture® and Azzalure®. All are approved by the French Health Authority and are very safe.

At Lazeo, our aesthetic doctors specialize in anti-aging treatments such as Botulinum Toxin and hyaluronic acid and you will be in capable hands to restore a more rested appearance.

What a Botulinum Toxin injection session involves and effects following the procedure

No special preparation is required prior to a Botox injection, although taking aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs is not recommended in the days before the session in order to prevent bruising.

To achieve a relaxed, calm and refreshed appearance, the doctor will administer micro injections in all affected areas.

The injections are not very painful and do not require any anesthetic. For more sensitive patients, a numbing cream can be applied to improve the patient’s comfort. After the injections, some redness and a few temporary bruises may appear in the treated areas.

The session lasts approximately 15 minutes. After the session, you may return to your daily activities immediately.

For 2 hours after the injection, strenuous exercise and stretching should be avoided. It is also advisable to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for 24 hours following the Botulinum Toxin injection session.

In fact, the product is injected directly into the muscles concerned and should not move elsewhere.

Contraindications:

  • Pregnancy;
  • Breastfeeding;
  • Neuromuscular disorders (e.g. myasthenia gravis);
  • Recent anticoagulant treatment;
  • Infection of the area to be injected;
  • Taking specific antibiotics: aminoglycosides.

Results

The results start to appear approximately 3 days after the injection session and settle about ten days later. At Lazeo, a check-up is scheduled two weeks after the injection to check the result obtained and ensure you are satisfied (checking that all is well and carrying out a touch-up, if necessary).

Botox rejuvenates the face by making it look relaxed, calmer and refreshed. It lasts between four and six months approximately, it is reversible and the duration of its effects considerably increase over the course of the sessions. One or two maintenance sessions a year are generally enough to maintain a good result.

    Questions/réponses

    • What is Botox?

      Botulinum toxin is a toxin secreted by a living organism, Clostridium botulinum. It is a protein derived from a botulinum toxin (clostridium botulinum). However, Botulinum toxin is purified 27 times before the product as we know it is attained, namely cosmetic or therapeutic Botox.

    • Has Botulinum toxin existed for a long time?

      Botulinum toxin was discovered in 1946. Its use in medicine started in 1970 in ophthalmology to treat strabismus, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm. The aesthetic benefit of botulinum toxin was observed accidentally in the late 80s.

      Some research in ophthalmology showed that patients treated with Botox for blepharospasm practically had no expression lines between the eyebrows, commonly known as glabellar or frown lines.

      Botox has been used in aesthetic medicine for over 25 years. Numerous studies have demonstrated that it is safe to use, and we therefore have authentic scientific knowledge about this product (as well as many studies carried out on its safety).

    • Is Botox dangerous?

      No. This product is not dangerous at all provided the dosage and instructions for use are complied with. Allergies and reactions to Botox are very rare and its action is entirely reversible (the product is reabsorbed) in about 4 to 6 months, on average. (Botox has no permanent effects on the face).

    • How long does the effect of Botox last?

      The effect of Botulinum Toxin can last between 4 and 8 months, depending on your facial expression and age. Some people are very expressive and other are less so. For the more expressive people with more marked lines, the effect of Botox rarely lasts beyond 6 months.

    • How much does Botox treatment cost?

      The cost of a treatment with botulinum toxin depends above all on the type and quantity of product used for the injections, as well as other factors such as the doctor’s qualifications, the quality (brand) of the injected product, etc.

      At Lazeo, you should estimate about €360 per vial of injected Botox.

      For the frown lines, which require a smaller quantity of Botox than other areas, you should estimate about €250.
