Facial peels: improving radiance and treating skin imperfections

Do you have large pores, a dull complexion, fine lines or small acne scars? Get new skin with a medical peel! A dermatological peel consists in applying a chemical agent to the skin to exfoliate superficial layers of the skin and stimulate the production of collagen fibers.

The main concerns treated with a medical peel are:

  • Dilated pores
  • Small acne scars
  • Oily skin
  • Blackheads
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Dark spots and melasma
  • Dark and colored circles under the eyes
  • Loss of skin tone
  • Hyperpigmentation

The skin tissue is destroyed to a variable extent depending on the depth of the peel:

  • Only the epidermis for a superficial peel…
  • The epidermis and the upper part of the dermis for a medium peel.

Doctor, what is a peel?

It is a subtle cocktail of more or less strong chemical substances depending on the concern to be treated. It mainly includes fruit acids, glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, etc.

A chemical peel is a technique used to revive the skin’s radiance and reduce imperfections through its skin-regenerating and cell-renewal action. By irritating the skin, it is therefore forced to replenish and renew itself.

The doctor applies the chemical peel to the skin in order to cause a limited and controlled destruction of the epidermis. S/he selects the concentration of active ingredients in the peel according to each patient.

After a few minutes of application on the face or on a specific area, the skin will become red or even tanned, and will peel a few days later. Time away from social activities will be longer or shorter depending on the peel selected.

The doctor often recommends several peel sessions, spaced out over about 3 weeks, to optimize the results. This type of treatment is not recommended when tanned or in the summertime. At the end of the session, the doctor will apply a soothing and repairing cream to the patient’s face.

There are several degrees of peel adapted to each concern and its severity.

Gentle peel

This peel will provide a superficial skin treatment.

It is primarily used to clean the skin completely and eliminate all impurities. The deep layers such as the dermis are not affected and the peel only treats the epidermis, i.e. the visible part of the skin. It will therefore tighten dilated pores, smooth and tone the skin and dry up acne pimples.

This type of peel is mainly suitable for young skin (20 to 35 years old) and for certain concerns that are easy to treat. It can be performed on all skin types: from light to dark skin (phototype 1 to 6).

As a result, it will help to:

  • Tighten pores
  • Decrease sebum production
  • Refine and even out skin texture
  • Treat blackheads
  • Deeply cleanse the skin
  • Brighten the complexion
  • Boost dermal hydration
  • Increase skin elasticity

Repeated gentle peels promote the synthesis of collagen in the dermis. It generally takes a few sessions spread over several months to achieve the desired results. This type of peel will make the skin peel and does not require much time away from social activities, which the patient can resume after the session.

Medium-depth peel

This is a fairly abrasive peel that reaches deep into the layers of the skin. The peel stimulates all the components of the dermis.

A higher number of collagen and elastin fibers will be produced by the fibroblasts. The skin will be more supple, hydrated and skin texture will be refined. The medium-depth peel is especially recommended for mature skin (40 to 55 years old). It helps to:

  • Fade acne scars
  • Rejuvenate the face by erasing fine lines
  • Illuminate the eyes by diminishing dark circles
  • Even out the complexion by eliminating age spots

It generally takes a few sessions spread over several months to achieve the desired results. This type of peel makes the skin peel and requires a few days away from social activities.

Contraindications:

  • Roaccutane or other acne medication
