What is the Fraxel laser?
The Fraxel Restore/DUAL laser is a non-ablative fractional laser which treats a number of skin indications. The Fraxel laser uses an extremely accurate laser beam that penetrates deep into the epidermis and targets damaged and old skin cells. This laser treatment stimulates the regeneration of skin cells and reveals a younger-looking, more radiant and even complexion.
The Fraxel laser has two wavelengths that make it possible to treat the superficial and deep layers of the skin.
As time goes by, the external environment (pollution, accidents, stress, etc.), hormones and natural aging disrupt the skin with potentially harmful and unsightly consequences:
- Scars (acne or hyperpigmented scars)
- Dark spots (pregnancy mask, age spots, sun spots, melasma, etc.)
- Wrinkles
- Impurities (dilated pores, oily skin, micro-cysts, blackheads, etc.)
- Sagging skin
- Stretch marks
- Reducing dark circles under the eyes
The Fraxel laser stimulates cell regeneration deep down and renews the surface layer of the skin.
How does a Fraxel laser session work?
The principle is simple, the laser is fractionated into myriad beams in order to deliver microscopic pulses deep into the skin. The area will be treated gradually using a handpiece, approximately 25% per session so as to allow for smooth skin renewal. The skin is treated one part at a time like a photo editing process. 3 or 4 sessions are needed to achieve an excellent lasting result (spaced a month apart).
Effects following the session
The skin is tanned and blistered after the session and in the following days will end up peeling. The patient may need time away from social activities for a few days while the skin peels and regenerates. Some slight swelling may occur but will disappear in the days after the session. It is advisable to avoid exposing the skin to the sun throughout the entire treatment to protect the skin from UV radiation.
Results
The Fraxel treatment gives immediate and gradual results. Straight after the treatment, the skin will look smoother and fresher, with a more youthful appearance. From the very first session, the patients will notice that the texture of their skin has improved and that wrinkles, pores and brown spots have faded. Acne scars and surgical scars will appear flatter and more even. Over the next 3-6 months, new improvements will be observed as collagen is produced in the deep layers of the skin. The final results are lasting and depend on the patient’s lifestyle, skin quality and skincare routine.
